Decking Installation Guidelines
 
Before beginning deck construction and installing decking, confirm with the local council that the proposed deck complies with council regulations and that its design and construction methods are compliant with the building code.
  • SMI Mahogany decking has a class 2 durability rating and is designed for use in H3.2 hazard applications.
  • Maximum Joist spacing is 450mm centres.
  • Minimum 4mm gap between each board and any abutment for 21mm x 90mm decking.
  • Minimum 6mm gap between each board and any abutment for 25mm x 140mm decking.
  • Minimum size 65mm x 2.8mm galvanized or stainless steel twist shank fixing nails for 21mm x 90mm decking.
  • Minimum size 75mm x 10g galvanized or stainless steel fixing screws for 25mm x 140mm decking.
  • Ensure adequate ground clearance to underside of joists and that the structure is well ventilated.
  • Decking must not be installed where it can be in contact with soil or fill.
  • It is recommended that a water repellant/ fungicide stain or oil coating with UV protection is applied to further enhance the beauty and durability of the decking.
  • Inspect decking coating on an annual basis for signs of weathering, and re-coat if necessary in accordance with coating manufacturers recommendations.
